Selection of Ground Motion Intensity Measures and Evaluation of the Ground Motion-Related Uncertainties in the Probabilistic Seismic Demand Analysis of Highway Bridges

Probabilistic seismic demand analysis (PSDA) is known as one of the critical intermediate steps in performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) design framework. Accuracy PSDA influenced by various sources uncertainties and mostly that stemming from ground motion-related variabilities. By taking a representative reinforced concrete (RC) continuous girder bridge case study, twenty-eight commonly used intensity measures (IMs) were investigated terms effectiveness, efficiency, practicality, proficiency, sufficiency assessments. models (PSDMs) several parameters (EDPs) developed under both near-field far-field motions through nonlinear time history analyses (NTHAs). In addition, effects uncertainties, such bin-to-bin (BTB) record-to-record (RTR) variabilities, on highway bridges also investigated. It concluded (1) IM efficiency contributes significantly to reflecting RTR variability an efficient may reduce influence estimation structural demands; (2) reflects statistical independence motion parameters, sufficient helpful rendering prediction (3) BTB variabilities records have significant influences PSDMs bridges.
